Grilling Safety – Healthy Outdoor Cooking

Suzy Staywell

The smell of memories

Last week, we were out for a walk on one of those beautiful spring evenings that we relish here in the Northwoods after a long winter. Wafting on the breeze, we detected the fragrance of a charcoal fire and something cooking, bringing with it reminders of happy summer days and festive occasions.

I know that things have changed, and nowadays, many people have a gas grill in their backyard, and grilling is more commonplace, but for us, growing up in the sixties, cooking out was a very special event, whether is was roasting wienies and marshmallows over a campfire on a family vacation, or hamburgers and steaks on the grill at a backyard family reunion.

Grilling meat produces toxic chemicals

In spite of the happy associations, and with the increased popularity of cooking out, it is important to understand that there are some health risks associated with this cooking method. This is because the combination of animal protein and high heat produces certain chemicals that may cause inflammation, damage to DNA and therefore, a higher risk of developing cancer and other diseases. These risks seem to increase as we age, since our bodies are less able to deal with these toxins.

Tips to reduce health hazard

It would naturally be unpopular to suggest that you give up grilling altogether, but there are some things you can do to minimize the health risk.

*Grill at lower temperatures by waiting until your charcoal is a bed of hot embers or by turning the gas down.

*Partially cook the meat in the oven or on the stove, to shorten time on the grill to produce fewer carcinogens.

*Marinate meat before grilling to decrease cooking time and reduce formation of toxic chemicals, particularly with acidic marinades, such as those with lemon juice or vinegar.

*Turn meat often on the grill using a tongs rather than a fork, since poking the meat may cause dripping fat and flare-ups, which can deposit carcinogens onto the meat.

*Use a cedar plank or elevated rack to move meat farther away from the fire.

*Use a meat thermometer to know when meat is thoroughly cooked, but not overcooked, since the longer you cook the meat, the more toxins will form.

*Grill leaner cuts of meat that will drip less and cause less charring, and dont eat the charred portions of grilled meat as they contain a known carcinogen.

*Grill more vegetables, and even fruits, with your meat, since they dont produce the same toxic chemicals that grilling meat does. As an added bonus, fruits and vegetables contain phytochemicals, which help reduce the effects of those toxins.

*Keep your grill clean, since carcinogenic residue can build up and be deposited on the food.

*Limit grilling to special occasions such as picnics or backyard barbecue parties, rather than making it a regular cooking method.

Not so much about the food

As we were walking along enjoying the evocative smell from our neighbor’s grill, we tried to remember the first time we had ever eaten food cooked outdoors. We realized that the fun we remembered was as much, about the setting, the occasion and the people we were with, as it was about the way the food was cooked.

By incorporating these safer grilling tips, you can still make your outdoor cooking occasions special, while at the same time protecting the health of your family and friends.

Summer Chocolates}

Although we believe that, anytime is chocolate time, yet the concept of summer chocolates seems quite fascinating. So, what is this stir about summer chocolates? It has been heard that a handful of chocolate manufacturers feel that summer marks the end of the chocolate season; because it is hot and chocolates are difficult to store. It has also been added that summer apparently has no customary celebrations for which chocolates can be used as gift boxes. But, do we really need a reason to consume chocolates?

As far as family celebrations are concerned, they occur round the year; and, if we talk about customary celebrations that mark the calendar days, then summer too has reasons to celebrate. We have Easter, Mothers Day, Ramadan, and Eid that we celebrate beginning from early summer to the end of it. These are some of the special occasions where not only use chocolates as gift items but also as one of our important food items served to our guests and family members.

However, chocolate sales are relatively low as compared to the other festive seasons; but this is not because of the climate change or cocoa crops. The remaining part of the year has more celebrations than this season. Also, in order to protect your sweet investments, it is important that you take extra care of your favorite stuff. You have to keep your chocolate boxes in dry cold temperatures as you dont want them to melt before they hit your mouth.

Humidity is not good for chocolates; hence it is not a good idea to store it in a refrigerator. It should be kept a little below room temperature, so a nicely air-conditioned room would work fine. You can also put a little bit more effort to keep your favorite summer chocolates fresh and flavorful. We all know that chocolates should be kept in cool, dry place as mentioned in every chocolate packet, but how do we do it. As refrigerating the same is not advisable, you can keep it in the pantry as that is usually a dark place and if not possible, then put the items in a dark tin box. Never refrigerate a chocolate and then lay it open before you consumer to warm up. Rather, it will either be very hard to your teeth or it will melt before it hits your mouth.

Although the shelf life of most of the chocolate products is about a year, we dont expect you to store your favorite thing for one whole year. Also, to enjoy the fresh flavor, it is better that you do not wait so much.

There is no special chocolate variety manufactured especially for summers. You can have any flavor or all the flavors round the year. But, you can try few seasonal fruit chocolates, that are, fruits wrapped with your favorite chocolate flavor. Also, gourmet items such as peanut butter and crunchy nuts infused in milk chocolate, dark chocolate candy filled with coconut, toffee flavored chocolates, orange chocolates, caramel truffles, chocolate in Hawaiian sea salt are some of the unique chocolate varieties you can try during summer days. At Njoy Chocolate, we produce some of them; but we have a huge range of chocolate varieties that you can savor any time of the year. We do not have a separate section for summer chocolates, but our varieties do match the seasons favorites. We believe in one thing while preparing chocolates that once you have it the effect should remain for you to enjoy a little bit more.

Jersey child abuse case ‘was not covered up’

Posted on July 19th, 2017

Tuesday, February 26, 2008

Frank Walker, the chief minister of Jersey, a United Kingdom Crown dependency off the coast of Normandy, France, denies that there was a cover up after a child’s remains were found.

The allegations of a cover-up stem from statements by Stuart Syvret. Syvret, the former Minister for Health and Social Services for Jersey, said that “It’s a continuum that we see. It’s a culture of cover-up and concealment and tragically the recent evidence is just the latest manifestation of that.”

It has come to light that Edward Paisnel, a notorious pedophile, used to visit the Haut de la Garenne children’s home dressed as Father Christmas. Paisnel in 1971, was given a sentence of 30 years for 13 counts of assault, rape and sodomy.

Syvret says he was dismissed from his ministerial position after highlighting the “torture” of 11 to 16-year-olds in the island’s care homes. He claimed he was “sacked for whistleblowing”.

Police are currently investigating twenty-seven cases of child abuse on the island and recently discovered the body of one child at a care home Haut de la Garenne in St. Martin, and with a potential six sites in the area where more bodies may be located. The home was closed in 1986 and since 2003 it has served as a youth hostel.

Jersey’s deputy police chief, Lenny Harper said “Part of the inquiry will be the fact that a lot of the victims tried to report their assaults but for some reason or another they were not dealt with as they should be.”

Harper added that “no evidence of a cover-up of any Jersey government” has been found. “We are looking at allegations that a number of agencies didn’t deal with things as perhaps they should.”

Syvret has encouraged the government of the United Kingdom to assign independent judges to oversee any cases that result from the investigations.

Builders originally uncovered a body at the care home in 2003 but it was only since an operation investigate child abuse started in 2006 that progress has been made. An ex-minister of the States of Jersey, the parliament of the island, has criticised the handling of the case, stating that abuse cases were mishandled.

Walker told senators that all necessary resources would be use to find the abusers. “None of us imagined that children in Jersey could be abused and mistreated in the way that is being suggested,” the BBC have quoted him as saying. “I express my shock and horror that these things have apparently happened within our island.”

Specialist police from the United Kingdom have been investigating after an enquiry turned up 140 sources verifying the claims of abuse.

You know that air conditioning makes you feel cool. But air conditioning is more than just cooling. It means keeping the temperature and humidity (moisture content) of air in an surrounded space, if it is one room or an entire building, at just the right level for the comfort of the people inside. It also means circulating the air and adding moisture if necessary. In summer it means removing by passing the air over cold pipes that gather water from the air, much as drops of water deepen on a cold water glass on a hot, damp day. Actually, we might almost say that air conditioning means creating an artificial, comfortable climate. In this article we shall discuss only ducted air conditioners

In dry climates air can be cooled simply. The cooler may be no more than a large fan that draws hot, dry air to a water soaked fiber mat. The air is cooled as it vaporizes the water. It is do dry to begin with that the added moisture will not cause discomfort.

Air conditioning has many uses besides keeping us comfortable. Many industries depend on it to keep the air in their plants clean, cool and at the right moisture level. For example, textile fiber such as wool and cotton will stretch or shrink as the moisture content of air changes. Inventors have tinkered with methods of air conditioning for years. Ancient Egyptians and Romans got some relief from the heat by hanging woven mats soaked with water across to their entrances of their houses, so the air would be could by evaporation. In the 15th century A.D., the famous artist and inventor built water powered fan.

As men is interest in science grew so did the number of schemes for getting cool. There were hundreds of ideas, but none of them really worked. In fact, many of the schemes made people feel worse because they added large amount of water to the air. Air is like a sponge. It will soak up water and make people feel sticky and uncomfortable, especially in hot weather. When the air is very moist, we say the humidity is high. When the air is dry, the humidity is low and we feel better.

If you have central air conditioning, it is important to keep the outside compressor compartment (condenser) as clean as possible. And of course the indoor return air filter must be kept clean also to progress the air flow throughout the domestic. There are not really many things the homeowner must do to keep their A/C happy other than cleaning and keeping the outdoor condenser free from debris and plant foliage. If you do these you should receive many years of faithful service from your new central air conditioning system.

There are several ways of making the quality of your house and your lifestyle a lot better. One of the factors that improve it is the cooling system used in your home. Using the right

ducted air conditioning

system will help increase air ventilation inside the house and a livable thermal condition. Provided with the current condition of the environment where global warming and heat waves happen come and go, air conditioners are necessary in every home, business establishment and other offices.

“Junk” foods may affect aggressive behaviour and school performance

Posted on July 3rd, 2017

Tuesday, October 4, 2005

Dr. Stephen Schoenthaler, a Professor of Criminal Justice at the California State University in Stanislaus, has long argued that there is a link between a healthy diet and decreased aggressive behaviour, as well as with increased IQ and school performance.

Dr. Schoenthaler is well-known for a youth detention center study where violations of house rules fell by 37% when vending machines were removed and the cafeteria replaced canned food by fresh alternatives. He summarizes his findings by saying that “Having a bad diet right now is a better predictor of future violence than past violent behaviour.” In a very large test, Schoenthaler directed a study in meals at 803 New York City schools, in low-income neighbourhoods, finding that the number of students passing final exams increased by 16%.

Critics have questioned some of Dr. Schoenthaler findings, due to the lack of placebo control groups. However, more recent work by Dr. Bernard Gesch, a physiologist at the University of Oxford, has placed some of the work on a more scientific footing. Dr. Gesch found that nutrition supplements produced a 26% drop in violations of prison rules over a placebo, and a 37% decrease in violent offences. The Netherlands has embarked on a wider scale dietary research program in 14 prisons.

The short term behaviour consequences of ingesting sugar are well understood: an initial burst on energy, followed a sugar low in which your body produces adrenalin, which makes you irritable and explosive. However, Schoenthaler and Gesch suggest that there are long term impacts over and above the short term consequences of blood sugar variations.

Two teenagers charged in alleged school attack plot

Posted on July 3rd, 2017

Saturday, July 14, 2007

Two Long Island, New York teenagers, aged 15 and 17, have been charged for their alleged involvement in a suspected plot to attack their school next April, on the ninth anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting massacre.

The plot was uncovered when the 15-year-old suspect lost his journal at the McDonalds restaurant where he worked. The journal was found by a fellow classmate of the teenagers’ school, who quickly turned it over to school officials.

The journal is alleged to have outlined the teenagers’ plan to attack the school with guns and home-made bombs. The 15-year-old suspect’s home and computers were searched and evidence was collected, which revealed that he allegedly tried to purchase black powder explosives and machine guns over the Internet.

A video was also found in which the same teenager allegedly names some students and staff he would like to attack at the school. The 17-year-old was allegedly planning to aid in the attack on the school.

The two teens were arrested and held in Long Island jail on misdemeanor conspiracy, which is punishable by up to one year in prison. The 15-year-old will appear in juvenile court on Friday and the 17-year-old suspect is expected to plead not guilty at a hearing.

Truck bomb kills at least 80 in Afghan capital city center

Posted on July 3rd, 2017

Wednesday, May 31, 2017

In what Afghan president Ashraf Ghani called “a crime against humanity,” earlier this morning, local time, a septic tanker truck filled with explosives detonated not far from the German embassy in Kabul’s Wazir Akbar Khan area, during the city’s morning commute. According to the country’s health ministry, at least 83 bodies have been found and over 450 have been wounded. The ministry’s spokesperson, Ismail Kawasi, said most of the victims were civilians, including children.

It was a car bomb near the German embassy, but there are several other important compounds and offices near there too. It is hard to say what the exact target is

“The attack demonstrates a complete disregard for civilians and reveals the barbaric nature of the enemy faced by the Afghan people,” Ghani said in an official statement. “The terrorists, even in the holy month of Ramadan, the month of goodness, blessing and prayer, are not stopping the killing of our innocent people,” he said. General John W. Nicholson Jr., commander of American and North Atlantic Treaty Organization forces in Afghanistan congratulated city security forces for preventing the truck from coming any closer to important government buildings and embassies.

This attack was unusual, though not unheard of, because of the sheer volume of the bomb involved. According to Kabul’s police chief, General Hassan Shah Frogh, “The blast was so huge that it dug a big crater as deep as four meters” (13 feet) and it damaged buildings as far as one mile (1.2 km) away.

Though an initial report by Interior Ministry spokesman Najib Danish claimed the site of the detonation as near one of the gates to the Afghan Presidential Palace, it was actually closer to the German embassy, which sustained considerable damage, according to NBC. Germany currently has more than 950 soldiers in Afghanistan as part of NATO’s Resolute Support Mission and helped the Afghan security personnel in their training. “It was a car bomb near the German embassy, but there are several other important compounds and offices near there too. It is hard to say what the exact target is,” said police spokesperson Basir Mujahid.

The Taliban has denied any association with this attack. Western countries have been fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan for about 15 years, including the U.S., Germany, and Britain, but many of these countries withdrew much of their forces before 2015. Since then, the Taliban has come to control about 40% of Afghanistan, per U.S. estimates.
